I know what’s right
A peasant was returning home when he saw a donkey in the field.
“I’m not a donkey”, said the animal. “I saw the Messiah being born. I have lived for two thousand years, and am still alive to give this testimony.”
Frightened, the peasant ran to the church to tell the parish priest. “Impossible!”, he said. The peasant took him by the hands and led him to where the donkey was. The animal repeated everything he had said before.
“I repeat: animals cannot talk!” said the priest.
“But you just heard it talk!” insisted the peasant.
“How stupid can you be! You’d rather believe a donkey than a priest!”
I read this little story a couple of weeks ago on Paulo Coelho’s blog “Warrior of light”, and it kept coming on to my mind, with every word I hear from people around me, every conversation, every phone call…
It’s really strange how people tend to believe, without questioning, what they were told, and ignore their right to doubt, the question marks hanging over what they call “reality”,
their ability to re-interpret their lives, re-interpret the world,
ignore what they see with their own eyes!
Maybe because it’s easier to convince ourselves that we know the only truth, and that everything else is a lie…
Maybe we’re afraid to find out how ignorant we are…
Maybe we just don’t want to bother asking “why?”
As for me, I’d rather believe the donkey!!!
